What are Creative Agencies

A typical agency usually focuses on production rather than other things. They usually include photography along with all its forms. However, nobody can claim that they are only limited to that. They can also hold a ton of features other than that of only photography. For example television ads, banner ads, web ads, and many more.

More specifically, Creative Agencies sometimes also known as Creative Advertising Agencies, focus on design, and most often they use outside partners such as ad marketing consultants to fully deploy their work.

In a beautifully-designed nutshell, a creative agency is one that spends its days and nights crafting artistic and engaging work for brands and fellow businesses.

Why are photographers needed in such agencies

There are several reasons why photographers are needed in such agencies. They also depend on certain factors. They are listed as follows:

What They Do: Photographers in an agency use their technical expertise, excellent creativity, and skills of composition to produce and preserve mind-blowing images.

Work Environment: Working conditions are of paramount importance for any sector of work. Even for photographers. Furthermore, their working conditions vary by specialty.

For example, some photographers keep on traveling for photo shoots, working either indoors or outdoors. On the other hand, other photographers work in studios. Not only that. There are still many other photographers who work in laboratories and use microscopes and other specialized tools to photograph subjects.

In addition to all of them, it would be very difficult for any individual photographer, especially the amateur ones, to arrange such working conditions. Owing to this reason, many designers prefer working in such agencies.

Salary: The salary is also another factor why such agencies are in great demand by photographers. The median hourly wage for photographers is $16.35. So, who would resist this amount if they could get this along with the other stated facilities?

Why the agencies hire such photographers

Agencies need to make a profit. They need money. They do it by using the photos clicked by the photographers. So if there are no photographers working the agency or in the company, then there is going to be no work of digital media in the creative digital agencies.

Be it a creative advertising agency or a branding agency, it needs professional photographers to work with them. If there are no professional photographers with proven expertise and working with them, then professional photographers are the only option for the agencies.

What Photographers Do

Professional photographers use their technical expertise, outstanding creativity, and exclusive composition skills to produce and preserve images that tell a story or record an event.

Duties of Photographers

They typically do the following:

Use various photographic techniques and lighting equipment

Archive and manage imagery

Market and advertise services to attract clients

Use photo-enhancing software

Analyze and plan the composition of photographs

Capture subjects in commercial-quality photographs

Enhance the subject’s appearance with natural or artificial light

Maintain a digital portfolio to demonstrate their work

How to get into advertising photography

There are many facets to photography that can be highly profitable to you. While you can spend years doing street photography or any other photography you like, and you are really performing well there, but nothing beats commercial photography. The primary and basic reason behind that is the amount it pays and the money you can make through this.

Furthermore, it is also very rewarding to work in that sector because while working here one usually shapes the opinion of people with their photography. On the other hand, it is nota quite a simple job to work for an ad agency. One really has to know what he or she is doing. And this works as the key to success. The better the knowledge one has about his or her work, the more successful he is in comparison to the others.

Know your style

Each and every one of us have got their individual style in doing anything. It is not an exception in advertising photography as well. That is the reason, before getting into commercial photography, it is quite important for the person to know what his style would be and what particular techniques would he follow as his signature. These would also turn out to be helpful in paving one’s way to success. Along with that, understanding one’s styles would help him to know the campaigns to work for.

And a signature style is not only restricted to photography. It is necessary for any form of art. No matter what the art is. A signature style helps in creating an impression that is totally true to you and nobody else.

Market Differently

To become successful in any sector you need to have the skill to market successfully yet different than the rest. To be successful here, you need to find ways to sell a true marketing message through your photography. In addition to that, your marketing strategy must be a dynamic and interesting one.

You can click pictures, build up your portfolio, and build-up yourself that way. However, if you, by any chance, do not become successfully able to execute this plan, then there will be a waste of the resources.

How to get into a creative design agency

If you do not find yourself comfortable with advertising media then there is nothing to worry about it. There are other possible aspects. If you want to try something different then you can go with creative design agencies. Here all you basically need is your creativity. That plays the most crucial role in here.

Also, you might find listed all the information pointwise to be a better option for you. Then let’s begin with a great smile as I am listing down all of that information as a list. So, let’s begin.

Follow the instructions properly

All the pieces of instruction sets that you are provided with are there for a reason. All of them have their particular objectives and targets. Hence, abiding by all of them could be the best choice.

Understand your work, position and requirements carefully

For you to shine bright, you need to know your responsibilities well. Your responsibilities might include you being creative in each and everything you do and follow. Furthermore, you can also think about everything in a different way and bring in the best possible outcome.

Doing the homework properly

Always do your homework properly. It has been assigned to you for a particular reason. The reason is that by doing your homework well, you will get to know each and every segment of your responsibility very well. You can get some incentives as well. In addition to that, if you are a job holder in any such organization, then you can do your work and at the same time impress your boss by your hard work.

Get to know your company well

If you work for a company, then to be successful in what you do is a major step. And this success can be brought closer by getting to know the company well. If you need to work well, then you need to know your company well. Simple as that. If you can guarantee that you know your company well, then your strategy will guarantee that you will shine in your career.

Think like a professional

To be able to reach your goals at the earliest possible opportunity, you need to think like a professional. And that too, from the very first. The reason behind this is we all know that the early bird catches the worm.

If you do not do it in the proper way from the very beginning, then you can rest assured that there is certainly someone else in your field, who will take the lead by pushing you backward.

Try to make your messages as attractive as possible

Whenever you are writing a message to anybody, be it your direct clients, or the CEO of any big company. You have to be clear in your voice and make your text as attractive as possible, regardless of when you are writing it.

There may be times you will consider thinking that whatever message you are trying to convey now may be something quite simple and does not demand much attention. BUT YOU ARE WRONG!!! You have to pay careful attention to it every time you write anything so that your messages grab everybody’s attention.

Always try your best

It is always advisable, that you give your best in everything you do. If you can do your best, then your work would be one of the best for sure.

Conclusion

No matter whether it is an advertising agency or a creative design agency that you work for or anything else, you need to be specific in setting up your goals and making the best possible routine for work. If you can do all of them to the very best, then it can be well assured that you will reach your destination, no matter whatever agency you are working for.

Nowadays, a lot of the photographers are tending to move towards advertising or commercial photography. This is because by this they get the opportunity to work with big and renowned companies which in most cases, gives them better job security and also good pay.

Alongside this, you also get the opportunity to work with great and well-known people, and also you get to work in exotic locations. All of these may sound quite interesting. However, being a professional commercial photographer has also got some criteria just as becoming a great studio manager.

It is not only that beginners would want to become an advertising photographer. It may be with expert photographers as well. At present, they might be working on some other sector, for example, any wedding or food photographer might now want to become an advertising photographer as their area of interest has shifted.

Educational Qualification

There is no such hard and fast rule for any certain college degree being necessary for this occupation. But it is quite a common trend that people opt-in for earning a general bachelor’s degree. It is a common practice.

At times, an educational background in the field of photography or fine arts is preferred.

Rather, if they have a handsome experience over technical and photography skills, this serves as a plus point. Then they do not need to spend a lot of time behind learning all of their necessary skills.

If they have an amazing portfolio of work, then that is a great plus on their work. A strong and attractive portfolio works a great deal in helping someone identify which photographer has got the skill and which one does not. It does not inhibit anything. Rather it serves as a helping hand.

Now, there may be a question that how would a photographer store the images, and is there any particular camera which he might use to get his job done. For cameras, there is not any hard and fast rule that one needs a particular camera or else he cannot capture amazing pictures to be used on an industrial scale. But there is one thing to focus on.

Nowadays, photographers use digital cameras instead of traditional film-based cameras that were used in the past. There is a reason behind that. The main reason is that digital cameras enable its users to store and edit images on a computer after the image has been captured. Here the images are captured electronically in a digital process.

On the other hand, for old school film-based cameras, there was no option to take pictures digitally or edit them afterward if there were any mistakes or unwanted marks in the image or just to enhance the look of it by editing.

Digital cameras have given us this facility.

Storing and Editing the Images and Making a Portfolio

You can sort your images and store them in a portfolio. For sorting you I prefer sorting them in category wise. For example, you can use categories such as food, luxury, and necessities.

For storing them, you can use your own personal website. This will help you to share your images to the audiences very fast rather than storing them on physical devices such as pen drives which makes the process slower. Just give them the link to your site and then they can browse and find what they need.

But don’t worry if you have not got a site of your own. A lot of photographers don’t have it. I would then suggest you use third party websites such as Behance and Flicker.

For the purpose of image editing, you can use Adobe Lightroom for some basic editing such as color correction, image straightening, etc. At times there might be the necessity of a little bit of touchup too. There you can do some retouching as per the demand of the image.

The main goal is to prepare and share your best capture with your potential clients which can help you to win a project.

Training and Career Requirements

Even though there are not any specific educational requirements for being a professional advertising photographer, but undergoing some of the relevant training programs would be highly advisable.

A person becomes a great photographer by taking a lot of photos from different angles and also through years of practice. This practice paves their way to success. For such artists developing their portfolio is of the utmost importance. If their portfolio is a catchy one then it increases the retention rates of the clients on it.

A proper portfolio is something at which clients or directors take a look before deciding which photographer to give the contract to.

It is always wise that in occupations like photography, you start working as the assistant of a professional and seasoned photographer and undergo training. This will not only help you develop your skills further, but you will also get to know and use a lot of the resources, which to you as a beginner would have been quite tough to find or manage.

Best of all, through this, you also gain some exposure to prospective clients.

Some important qualities that need to be present

Every picture captured by the photographer plays quite an important role to grab the attention of the client. Hence, they must always have the artistic quality to have that appealing feeling. A good photograph is one that has a combination of the proper colors, appropriate tone of light and shadow, and a good understanding of near and far objects.

Sometimes achieving some proper computer skills is also quite important. This is because all the captured images might not have the proper blend of shadow and light exposure or might have other issues. At times there may be some unwanted objects that need to be removed. Hence, some computer and image editing skills are necessary.

Since the subject of discussion is advertising photography, then a photographer with the proper marketing strategies and a great ability to reach out to clients can make the game much easier.

When portraying an object for advertisement, it must have the proper attention to detail. Hence, when doing such photography, proper attention to detail is a huge plus.

Some easy tips and guidelines

Tip-1 Make your work stand out from the rest

Apart from making your work into an amazing portfolio, you must also do the extra work that makes your work stand out from the rest. This will add some extra value to your work and also will pave your way to success.

Along with all of those, this also increases your chances to get selected for any certain position where you are competing with a lot of other people. Hence, you have to walk the extra mile to give yourself the extra benefit.

Tip-2 Do a lot of experiments

An image can be attractive and eye-catchy in a number of ways. And similar to it, there are a number of ways in which a photo can be captured. Some with great light exposure, while some with a good blend of colors.

You have to capture a lot of different photos in a variety of styles and achieve an understanding that which particular types of photos are liked the best by the audience. Then you can work accordingly and raise yourself higher from the rest.

Tip- 3 Study enough and study properly

It is always wise to study those particular people who are already shining in the field you want to enter. No matter whether you are a beginner and have targeted a particular industry or you are a pro who wants to make a shift.

You should always study successful people well and must understand how they became successful. Alongside this, you also have to go through all the hardships the successful people have gone through to take yourself to that position. In short, if you want to shine like the sun, first you have to burn like the sun.

In addition to that, it is also necessary that you understand the current advertising trends which are popular, and also study the marketing styles. Sometimes, you may find that products such as shoes can be marketed well using social media marketing and at times the scenario may be different. Hence, you should study them well.

Tip-4 Learn about networking

As stated above, you must need to make a positive exposure to the clients and grab their attention. If you cannot do so, then it will be quite difficult for you to be successful. Additionally, you need to make some extra-ordinary artistic work that will sieve you from the rest.

If you can reach a lot of people who can be your potential clients by extending your network, then the rest of the work would be a piece of cake.

There are several ways of marketing. They can be divided into two basic subdivisions. One is online while the other is offline. In the two upcoming paragraphs, I will describe the two different processes in detail.

For online marketing, in particular, I have found social media marketing quite useful. Here, my suggestion would be to use Facebook groups which can help you find the relevant traffic. You can search by the name of “Popular Advertising Photography” or “Commercial Photography”. There is also the option for LinkedIn groups as well. There are several groups for photographers on LinkedIn as well. You can join there and make your advertisement for advertisement photography and get some buyers rolling in.

For offline marketing, the scenario is quite different. Here, you need to join and attend the different hackathons, trade bodies, and professional associations where you will find plenty of audiences who require the aid of photographers as such.

Tip-5 Understand and get yourself the right equipment

You might have got the experience of capturing a great photo and editing it on a phone and publishing it on social media. This might help you get great fame for your post but that may not work out in the field of professional advertising photography. That will, for sure, make your clients think twice before hiring you.

From my experience what I have got is that for professional-grade photography, you need professional equipment. This includes a professional camera, the proper lenses, a couple of spare batteries, and good quality of tripods.

It is also wise that you invest in a good secondary camera. This is because, I have personally experienced times when during a shoot, my main camera stopped working and started giving errors. If I did not have the spare secondary camera, all I could do is pack up my stuff and get back home.

And last but not the least, it is wise to invest in getting good quality photo editing software. It will be best if you can get the online version. This is because, at times, if you don’t even carry your laptop, then as well you can manage a pc and log in to your account and start working instead of sitting down idle.

Tip-6 Advertise to your right target audiences

All the products that are available around the globe today have specific markets. Hence, you should always advertise and showcase your portfolio to the right people.

You might be an outstanding photographer, but if you do not have the proper target audience, then your revenue might decrease and you might consider yourself to be lost out. Hence, to achieve the best results, you must always study your target audience before you start advertising.

Tip-7

Tip-7 Expand your marketing knowledge

It is quite important that one can market efficiently by reaching out to clients in order to sell his products properly. There are several digital and social media marketing techniques available today. For example, Facebook Marketing and Instagram Marketing. If you can become an expert on them, then you can use them to boost up your sales and bring in revenue.

Work In your Locality:

First of all, let your family and friends know about your new business. They will be happy to know about it. Tell them details about your business and let them know how you can be helpful to them and as well as to other people. They’ll love to give you the responsibility of the photography unit in every occasion they arrange. They are the people who will never hesitate, rather they will love to share your works with others and be proud of you. They will give you the very first clients in your business. So never neglect this great source. Start your marketing from family, friends and later to the area you live in.

Be recognized in your area, try to get works at your locality. If they properly know your business, they will lead you to more clients. Reach out to local businesses to find out if they need any photography works done. Brand yourself and consider giving away some discount to your local clients. Family oriented photography, wedding coverage or business photography, try every aspect of work to provide services in your community. These are the people who know you in person, and if you create more value by doing fair and great tasks for them they will become your regular clients as well as they will bring more.

2. Make Business Cards:

To attract and invite almost everyone you meet and tell them about your business you need your own creatively designed eye-catching business card. A tiny card that will resemble your brand uniquely and all the info at one place if someone needed to contact you. A card is the first approach to let people know about you, after that they will be able to find you on social media and even browse your website. You don’t have to individually ask them for doing so. They’ll do it on their own.

It’s a small sized offline portfolio. Throughout your business days, you will meet new faces every day. You can’t invite everyone to like your Facebook page, which doesn’t work and over time they will forget, but if you give your card to them it will look more professional, and they will get a glance about your quality and brand even before inquiring your online portfolio. Make a business card and make it artistic.

3. Build Networks:

Networking is vital in your photography business career. It will take a long time to have great connections. The more your business will grow older, the more connections you will make. Try to make connections with the people who are best in your market. Maybe a senior photographer in your locality. He can be accommodating to bring you new projects. You can work along with him being as his assistant. These people are very busy, so if they have extra clients whom they can’t handle they will lead extras to you. That’s an excellent recommendation. You do your job. Voila! You get a new client as well as strengthen the relationship between your connections.

If you don’t have a good network, start from today. Search for upcoming business-related events and attend them. Visit occasions, meet up with people, admire others’ works by sending them emails (If they are outstanding enough to be praised), there are so much to do. You have to have an interest in interacting.

4. Collaborate With Others:

Collaboration is an excellent thing in this field of photography. You can collaborate with other photographers you know. Offer some unique and challenging work for both of you. Do some extraordinary work that you couldn’t do alone. Then show-off your works both online and offline. This will make better connections for both sides. Who knows, collaborating on a project could lead to new opportunities. Moreover, this method is an excellent source of referrals.

Photographer Olibia Bossert wrote an article on her website answering why collaboration is the best form of marketing based on her own experience. You can check the article, and you will find some interesting facts.

5. Charitable Works

You might not want to waste your time by clicking free photos, but, charitable photography is right for your business marketing. Here’s how. You can meet-up with the charitable groups, those who are restlessly working to change poor people’s fate. Many charitable works are happening around you. Maybe these groups need a volunteer for photography work. You will be a part of good deeds and also get remarkable good exposure in your community. Make sure you watermark in those photos and get tagged in social media.

Another way is that, select some of your best photos and arrange a photography auction. The money you get, donate them for a good cause. You can do it every year. By seeing you doing these remarkable works, new clients will love to hire you as well as the older customer may become your forever clients.

6. Collect Reviews:

Never be too shy to ask for reviews. Ask your clients to say something about your service. Ask them if they can spend a few minutes to give ratings to your Facebook page, Google my business, and you can use the best reviews as testimonials. Give them your best service so that they feel the urge to recommend others as well as spend a few minutes on ratings.

B. Online Marketing

Alongside offline marketing, it’s also useful that you make your online presence more solid by doing the following things step by step from the very beginning so that you don’t miss a bit of attention. These are must implementable techniques every professional photographer suggests. Let’s deep dive into these topics:

1. Build an Elegant website

You have to make a highly engaging site that sells more. There are some essential things you have to consider when you’re making a website for your newly established business.

Show best works: On your site, show your best clicks and feature them. You don’t have to upload every photo you click. Find the best ones and imagine if you were looking for a photographer, would those images make you feel astonished? If yes, then that’s the picture that should be on your website. This creates a positive impression on the views so strong that they feel the emotion to come back.

Look: Give your site an artistic but minimal look. Don’t over-design. Focus on a specific category, and share most eye-catching photos only.

About Me: Your ”about me” page should be well-detailed, and it’s more like your portfolio. After seeing your photos, visitors will go to this page. So, give them the most important information they need to know about your brand, what you do, what are your beliefs, how you work, why they should hire you, your specialty, everything.

Mobile Friendliness: Your website should be 100 percent responsive. So, it easily fits in every device. It’s not about you, it’s about them. If they feel difficulty visiting or browsing through your website they will dump your website. Moreover, it’s the story of every website that most of their visitors are from smart-phones. It’s no wonder that most of your clients will be searching for you via a smart-phone. Your website maybe wedding-oriented, if that so, who will be visiting your website? 18-30 aged peoples. They spend most of their internet time on the phone. So, you got my point, didn’t you?

SEO Friendly: It’s essential to make your website SEO friendly. Your website should focus on a few keywords. Know your clients, who are they, who are you going to serve most? What are they going to search on if they need the help of someone passionate like you? If you do your website’s SEO properly, I can ensure that you will get more clients. You can do it yourself, by learning and doing approach or could use hiring a freelancer. Google’s free keyword research tool will help you to find ideal keywords for your site.

2. Start Writing

You might be thinking I am a photographer, why should I start writing?

Because, if you write you can give your photo an extra meaning. Your photography blog will add value to your brand as well as in your business. However, it’s not the only way you can use your writing skill.

You can write in a local newspaper about photography and your journey. [it’s offline though]

Create a blog section on your website where you can share your experience.

You can guest write in photography based popular sites.

It’ll show the clients how professional you’re and your engagement in mighty magazines, newspaper, websites will make your brand more strong in its way.

You can interpret your photo, create a story of them and when you’re writing about a particular picture you can easily find what’s wrong with that photo. Hence you may find another point for improvement.

Writing with a silent picture will add more value. Start practicing from today.

3. Use of Social Media

A business that has no existence in social media, can you imagine that in the 21st century? Unimaginable! Your business should be on social media, millions of people use them, and it’s a matter of time that you’ll get that amount of fans and many clients and opportunities from them.

I will discuss four major social sites.

Instagram: This website is image oriented website. That leads to more engagement to your brand. Also, showing your creativity in Instagram will give you uncountable admiring fans.

Facebook: If you want to build a community based on your identity and brand, Facebook is best in community building.

Google Plus: Use this platform for best results in search engine. What you share in Google plus that is immediately added to the giant search engine.

Pinterest: As per my experience, photographers I have known and know until now use this mighty social media to build their brand.

Honorable mentions: 500px, Tumblr, Stumble Upon

However, it’s easy to start with them, but difficult to control each of them accurately. If you become busy consider someone to handle your social media. For starters, your friend can be a great help.

Tips:

You can read this article to know about some of the ruling photographers on Instagram and how they climbed this height. Social Media Photographer’s Rule.

4. Best Use of Email

Create an email list of your customers. Send them a newsletter weekly, or monthly. You can send them free wallpapers which they can use and share with others. Once a month you can send a promotional newsletter to them. Remember don’t bore them by sending email regularly. Your email should contain values for your clients.

Here’s how you can create your email list:

Use a mailing list provider. It will help you to build your email list. Ex. List Builder By Sumome

Put a ‘Sign Up’ box on your website. Moreover, ask visitors, if they want your dozens of free wallpaper or free eBook on photography, after signing up by email they can get the files.

Ask your clients if they want your newsletter, or if they do so you’ll give them some discount or free things.

Creating an email list is essential because the engagement rate is very high among the other marketing tactics. So, you have to use it for your marketing purpose.

5. Give Faster Response

If you don’t respond fast, marketing won’t work that well. Try to respond quickly to every new inquiry. Responding quickly doesn’t have to be in an hour, you can reply in 12 hours or a day as long as you are consistent. Besides you can set a time in a day to respond to queries in your social media or email. If you’re doing this consistently, then you’re lucky enough to get more customers because many photographers are wrong at this.

6. Sign Up For Google My Business

Another major step is to register your business on Google so that Google can show you when someone searches for photographers in their area. Google will show your business details, such as where is your office, your phone number, available time and testimonials by your clients. Imagine your business details popping up right after the search. Isn’t it amazing?

If there are other businesses, Google will compare all of them including you. Another benefit is business listings like this show up above the organic search results. Clients can write reviews, give you stars on your business that will be attached to your business listing. These will work as testimonials in a visible place.

It’ll need time to complete the setup. You need to follow every step and verify your business details. After all of these, you’re on their map.

See in the Picture:

7. Enter a Photo Contest Online

Enter a photo contest and boom. It’s easy to contest. Submit your photo, if it standouts from all, sure you’re the winner. Contesting online is a great thing to spread your brand. These websites feature winners and most time runners-up too. So, why wait?

Moreover, you’ll make connections from it; you’ll learn who’s better than you or who can be useful for your business. You can find the latest contests here, photocontestinsider

8. Discount Offer and Referrals

For returning customers: You can give away some discount to your old clients. For example, one year ago, you were hired at a wedding, now you can give them discounts for coming back and hire you for 1st-anniversary celebration photography. You have their contacts, and you can send them amazing postcard wishing them their upcoming anniversary and offer them the discount. You can send it via email too. Alternatively, you can create an ad for returning client.

For particular groups (ex. Students): You can give students a special discount if they hire you on their annual day photography or in any of their project. They are the people who want your service, but sometime they can’t afford that much. So, it’s a great marketing idea, in the future they will be your returning customer.

For special day photography: You can give some discounts on special days, such as valentine days, Independence day, on Christmas, on EID, on Puja, etc. There are a lot of special days. You can use one of them as your marketing tool.

Ask Referral: Ask referrals from your regular customers, and you can give them some incentive. They will be happy to provide you with some referrals.

9. Paid Ad. Driven Marketing on Facebook

Facebook ads are far better than any other ads. In Google ads, people need to search the term, so that Google can show them the ads. Whereas on Facebook, their algorithm shows the advertisement in the news-feed and messenger. Moreover, you can target your area, age.

People use Facebook a lot nowadays. So it’s useful to spend some dime on the advertisement. Maybe some of them are thinking about hiring someone for their occasion, and miraculously your ad popped up in their news-feed. Also, they may come to you first. Because they got to know you in the first place, give it a try sometime, if it helps your business grow, you can do more of it.

Be aware of the mistakes, and you can know more about errors and how to be good at making valuable ads. Try reading this reference article.

Mistakes those Photographers Make with Facebook Ads

How to use these techniques:

You can’t apply all of those methods at once or even in a month. You won’t get the result right away. You’ve to wait and work consistently on these methods. Don’t stress yourself up too much. Plan your every day, work a bit every day.
